Royal College Specialty Committee Report to CSCRS

Dear Colleagues:

It is with pleasure that I report on the latest developments at the level of the Specialty Committee in Colorectal Surgery. We have achieved a major milestone by becoming a specialty certified by a Royal College certification examination. A Board of Examiners, chaired by Dr. Terry Phang, was brought to Ottawa to develop a specialty specific examination which was administered on September 23rd, 2009. The Specialty Committee has completed the major task of updating the Specialty Specific Training Objectives and the Training Requirements for our three programs. All our programs were approved for accredited training in colorectal surgery in Canada.

As President of the Specialty Committee, I attended a workshop for new Chairs in Ottawa last fall and will be attending a similar meeting next November. This is a good opportunity to promote exchanges between specialties and participate in the evolution of the College. We have worked hard on the FITER and have succeeded in transforming the objectives into competency-based specialty specific performance indicators. Recently, I was invited to present our documents to the General Surgery Specialty Committee meeting during the recent Canadian Surgery Forum in Victoria. We will continue to monitor the standards of training in Canada and will participate in the development of exams, to be offered to graduating fellows and established specialists wishing to obtain certification in Canada. The Royal College website has the pathways to obtain accreditation for those in practice.
