ABOUT CSCRS

Who We Are

The Canadian Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons encourages the highest professional and educational standards among surgeons in order to provide the best possible care for all individuals affected by colorectal disease

The CSCRS was founded in 1983 as the professional organization of colon and rectal surgeons in Canada. Currently there are close to 100 members including young surgical trainees who are resident members. The membership includes surgeons in all provinces of Canada, and there are a number of members in other countries including the USA. The diverse membership includes academic colon rectal surgeons as well as community surgeons who specialize in colon and rectal surgery and practice in urban and rural locations.

The CSCRS began its visioning exercise in February 2007 with a ‘Visioning Taskforce’ consisting of five Members in the colorectal field:  Dr. Cliff Yaffe (Chair), Dr. Marcus Burnstein, Dr. Don Buie, Dr. Gabriela Ghitalescu and Dr. Terrence Phang.  These individuals are championing the development and aims of the Society through the creation of its vision and missions statements as well as the strategic objectives.   Their recommendations to the Members should be approved in principle by June 2007 and officially sanctioned at the AGM in September 2007.

The CSCRS is dedicated to setting and maintaining high professional and ethical standards to disseminate knowledge and encourage teaching and research related to colorectal disease.  The Society supports and promotes self-education, further development of the specialty, establishing post-graduate training and research, involvement in collaborative studies, and regional promotion of the specialty.    The CSCRS is committed to establishing collaborative efforts with partners and key stakeholders also committed to enhance quality of care for patients affected by colorectal disease.  For more information about partnerships and sponsorships with the CSCRS, please visit our “Sponsorship” section (link).
